Tokyo Game Show 2016’s Hottest News

This year’s Tokyo Game Show (TGS) was filled with new games, new trailers, and release dates. TGS kicked off with a PlayStation press conference (In Japanese) showing off their new hardware, release dates, and more with Hideo Kojima’s new game Death Stranding. The PlayStation conference was just Day 0 and wasn’t the only news to come from TGS. The conference was a great way to start off the biggest video game trade show in Japan.

On September 14 PlayStation held a press conference, first showing the new PS4 bundles. There will be a bundle for Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV (Luna Edition). Along with the reveal of the new bundles, the PS Vita is getting a new revision – only in japan though.

Publisher Koei Tecmo is in the works with a new game called, Musou Stars. Similar to the Dynasty Warriors franchise, the game will be a mash-up of Koei Tecmo games, featuring characters like, Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden), Kasumi (Dead or Alive) and much more. Musou Star is set to release in 2017.

Hideo Kojima (Kojima Production) also took stage at the conference, revealing more about his new game Death Stranding – which was revealed at E3. He first talked about the reason behind the logo. The dripping liquid under the letters isn’t liquid. In fact, the lines are cords. He then explained that the main theme of the game is about people and how we are connected by strands.

Kojima also talked a little more about what kind of game it is. Death Stranding will be an action-open world game with multiplayer elements that will connect players with the strands. At launch the game will feature 4K resolution and support HDR lighting. The game is still under development, so no release date yet.

There were many gameplay trailers that came out of TGS. The biggest and most popular trailer was Persona 5– which already released in Japan. For western viewers there was a 20-minute gameplay trailer showing off UI, combat, and a little narrative. Right off the bat the trailer looks beautiful and vibrant with color. The developers did an amazing job making the UI, it has a stylish and clean look.
The aesthetic alone is enough for me to get excited. Japan can already get their hands on Person 5, while the west will have to wait until February 14 (PS4 & PS3) to encase ourselves in the world of Persona.

This year’s TGS was packed with news and announcements. And to start it off with a big PlayStation conference made it more memorable. With new games like persona 5, Musou Stars, and Death Stranding on the horizons, it has never been a better time to be a PlayStation owner. What do you think was the best news to come out of the Tokyo Game Show?

Destiny 2’s New “Gambit” Mode Revived the Game’s Competitive Scene

Destiny 2’s competitive scene has always been a second thought compared to the co-op PvE activities. At the launch of Destiny 2 Bungie tried a different more team-play orientated approach with an all 4v4 pvp match-up. Over time players got tired of that formula, especially, the way players were strategizing. The only way to be competitive is to team-shot a player at long distance, this was the only way everyone played. This kept the matches long and stale. Bungie understood the frustration and decided that they will change something about the Crucible (PvP). In July, Bungie pushed an update that changed the 4v4 format for Crucible to a 6v6, just how it was like in Destiny 1. Adding two more players on a team might not seem like a big change, but it completely changes how freely your team can strategize, this is especially true with solo matchmaking. Bungie knocked it out of the park with this change, of course they had a lot of help from the community. The community wanted th...

The Calming, out of this World Experience from Tetris Effect is a Great Change of Pace and Emotion from Other Tetris games

Ahh, Tetris. A game that your parents and almost every other parent knows. The longevity of it has made it evolve over its existents with the “hold” mechanic – which I’ve grown up with -- and doubling down on the competitive nature of Tetris with Tetris Battle, Tetris DS, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and more. Growing up I was terrible at Tetris – making lines with falling blocks was simple enough, but I didn’t understand how to fix my mistakes. There are many insane Tetris players that I can’t even think about competing with. The stress of trying to keep the best layout of blocks while trying to keep up with my opponent is too intense for my taste. However, Tetris Effect is the total opposite of all those competitive Tetris incarnations. The way Enhanced Games and Mizuguchi plays with music and players emotions to then incorporate it into a puzzle game or even something like Rez: Infinite can give old concepts like Tetris a new breath life. Everything in Tetris Effect is amplified by x...

Destiny 2 Event: An Underwhelming Return for Lord Saladin and The Iron Banner

Over the last week Destiny 2 held The Iron Banner, an event that occurs every month. Lord Saladin visits the tower with neat looking armor and weapons that will be rewarded to the guardians that are participating. This new iteration of The Iron Banner is great for new players, it gives them a reason to come back every day and the token system is simple, unlike the bounty system in Destiny 1. Though this iteration of Iron Banner caters to the new and casual audience, it leaves us mid to hardcore players with not much to care about. There’s nothing that progresses our power level, no difficulty with Light advantage off, and on top of that, players not committing to an Iron Banner match. Eastern-Inspired Iron Banner Gear  I’ve dabbled in Iron Banner in Destiny 1, it wasn’t my kind of game mode. I liked the PvP in both Destiny and Destiny 2, but once someone talks about hardcore PvP my interest was gone, my only incentives were getting the gear and getting my Light ...
