Upcoming Games I’m most Excited for

2016, so far has been an amazing year for video games. Games that released in 2016 ranged from small indie to AAA massive games that a lot of gamers adored. This year we had a huge change with the release the Oculus Rift, and the HTC Vive Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. Players and developers have a new way to play games. On development side it’s a lot more challenging. Developers have to change and learn new ways to implement their ideas to work with VR. 2016 has been a big step for the gaming industry with VR and announcements of new consoles, but the year isn’t over. There are still a lot more to come before the end of 2016.

There are many games releasing before the end of year. The games that has my attention are Titanfall 2, Dishonored 2, and The Last Guardian. These titles are sequels, except The Last Guardian, I want to see what new ideas the developers come up with and how they would integrate the new and old mechanics to create a new experience in the same fluid gameplay.

 Titanfall 2
Respawn’s first title Titanfall was released in 2014, exclusive to Xbox One. Titanfall was reviewed well, but the player base wanted a narrative to come with the amazing feel of the multi-player. Now it’s 2016 and Respawn is back with a sequel to Titanfall. I haven’t played the first Titanfall, everything I’ve seen got me motivated to play the sequel. Adding a story mode, which respawn has the pedigree to come up with an engaging, in depth narrative. Respawn is listening to the community, and is willing to change and come up with new ideas. This time around Titanfall 2 will be on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 28, 2016. This helps the developers gain more attention to all gamers. I can’t wait until I can run through the multi-player. To feel the fluid shooting, climbing and controlling “Titians” with the online multi-player. With the technical test demo happen this weekend I’m coming in really excited to see how it plays. The story is a much needed addition, all players who don’t like to play online can just start with the single-player mode, and when anyone feels comfortable can jump right in the multi-player.

Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2 is another sequel to one of the best stealth game of last console-generation. It continues the story narrative from the first game. This time you can choose to play as Corvo, the protagonist of the first game or Emily as they stealthily fight off overseers and howlers, to reclaim the throne of Karnaca. I started and finished the first Dishonored and It was a great experience. There are some much options to complete an objective. You can sneak around, climb pipes and try to non-lethally end the character’s plans, or you can run and gun everyone and have an exciting Stealth kill. Watching the new trailer at E3, presented new tools and ways for the players to complete an objective. After playing the first Dishonored, I really have a connection with the series and characters. I hope Arkane studios plays more with the characters, going more in depth with their backstories. Dishonored lets the player be free and be able to complete an objective in many different ways.

The Last Guardian
I’ve never heard about The Last Guardian, until E3 2015 at Sony’s press conference. Now that a year has passed it is set to release on October 25, 2016. After being in development for almost 10 years, Team Ico is under massive pressure. All the resources and talent they have with the time they had, a lot of players are expecting an amazing playing experience. Team Ico had success in the pass with, Ico (2001) and Shadow of the Colossus (2005). Now I have not played any of Team Ico’s games, but both games were received really well, by critics. The Last Guardian may have trouble on the development side, but with me and only getting exposed to it recently, I really want to see where everything fell apart. The game is massive, in the sense of scale in the world. Trico is creature that will be alongside you during the game. It provides the pillar of wonder and companionship; Trico’s actions will affect the surrounding environment. Being made for the PS3, I want to see how far they went to improve the game for the current generation of consoles.

There are many games to get hyped for in the coming months before 2016 ends. I will be playing Titanfall 2, Dishonored 2, and The Last Guardian. 2016 is the most memorable year for video games, for me, learning new things about the industry is still a learning experience, but I enjoy it. So let’s give 2016 everything videos games has to offer, and move to a new and exciting year of 2017.

Destiny 2’s New “Gambit” Mode Revived the Game’s Competitive Scene

Destiny 2’s competitive scene has always been a second thought compared to the co-op PvE activities. At the launch of Destiny 2 Bungie tried a different more team-play orientated approach with an all 4v4 pvp match-up. Over time players got tired of that formula, especially, the way players were strategizing. The only way to be competitive is to team-shot a player at long distance, this was the only way everyone played. This kept the matches long and stale. Bungie understood the frustration and decided that they will change something about the Crucible (PvP). In July, Bungie pushed an update that changed the 4v4 format for Crucible to a 6v6, just how it was like in Destiny 1. Adding two more players on a team might not seem like a big change, but it completely changes how freely your team can strategize, this is especially true with solo matchmaking. Bungie knocked it out of the park with this change, of course they had a lot of help from the community. The community wanted th...

Mario Tennis Aces “Swing Mode” is Really Disappointing

Mario Tennis Aces is the latest entry to the Mario Tennis series. This time around Nintendo did no wrong with their tennis series giving us an adventure mode where you move from level to level to complete a series of challenges, a fun online/offline tournament, and exciting local play. I haven’t played the Mario Tennis series since the GameCube days, but I’m having as much fun as I did back then, expect for one mode that made me hate motion controls. During the lead up to launch I had questions about full motion controls, if they would support it for full matches? Can it be an alternative? and will it be like Wii Sports or will it have depth will in the base game? These questions were answered just a couple of days before launch and I was disappointed in how Nintendo implemented the motion controls. Coming from the developers of Wii Sports and how well the motion controls worked with the tennis mini-game gave me hope that Nintendo could do something great with motion ...

The Calming, out of this World Experience from Tetris Effect is a Great Change of Pace and Emotion from Other Tetris games

Ahh, Tetris. A game that your parents and almost every other parent knows. The longevity of it has made it evolve over its existents with the “hold” mechanic – which I’ve grown up with -- and doubling down on the competitive nature of Tetris with Tetris Battle, Tetris DS, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and more. Growing up I was terrible at Tetris – making lines with falling blocks was simple enough, but I didn’t understand how to fix my mistakes. There are many insane Tetris players that I can’t even think about competing with. The stress of trying to keep the best layout of blocks while trying to keep up with my opponent is too intense for my taste. However, Tetris Effect is the total opposite of all those competitive Tetris incarnations. The way Enhanced Games and Mizuguchi plays with music and players emotions to then incorporate it into a puzzle game or even something like Rez: Infinite can give old concepts like Tetris a new breath life. Everything in Tetris Effect is amplified by x...
