Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris Stream #2 – “New Ways to Play”

Last week Bungie hosted part 1 of a 3-part stream talking about Osiris, Mercury, the Lighthouse, and the Raid Lair. Yesterday’s stream was the second part and in the stream, they went more in-depth about the activities on Mercury. We saw the biggest public event in Destiny, narrative Strikes, the Infinite Forest, and more information on the forge. Even though they gave us meaty information about the expansion they are keeping other aspect of the expansion hidden for us players to discover.

This stream we welcome back DeeJ as our host, as well as Dave Matthews (Art Director) and Dan Miller (Game Director). After the introductions of the hosts they dived into the biggest public event in Destiny. The event was prerecorded because public events are random, and no one knows how long it would take to spawn.

The Biggest Public Event in Destiny

This public event is exclusive to Mercury and each phase has a hand-crafted area designed just for this public event. With every phase there is a boss, killing the boss will drop orbs and the team must work together to dunk the orb into a warp. Once all orbs are placed a Vex cannon will open and the fireteam will be shot onto a secluded island once entered. This event is then repeated until the event is complete, giving the fireteam 2 loot chests at the end.

Lost Prophecies

Lost Prophecies are optional end-game quest that will reward you with Vex weapons. This is associated with the forge and the “history marker”. Lost Prophecies are divided up into 11 Verses, which, in turn gives you 11 weapons. Each Verse will task you with getting an element (Prophecy Offering) that will allow you to forge a weapon. Every element is obtained through playing the game. They mention wanting players to have added incentive while playing, this is what we’re missing from base Destiny 2, an incentive to do end-game activities.

Strikes Will Now Involve Main Story Narrative

With the addition of the Heroic Strike Playlist, 2 Strikes will be added to the overall pool. These Strikes wasn’t shown on the stream, so we must wait and see how impactful these new Strikes are to the overall story. I’m talking about narrative because there is a lot of lore in our Strikes, there is going to be even more with more to do with the main narrative, with Osiris, Sagira, and Mercury being added to Destiny’s world this could be a great narrative piece for us lore nerds.

The Ever-Changing Infinite Forest

The Dark Future
The Present
The Infinite Forest is in the core of Mercury, the Vex hollowed-out the planet to create their own space where they control time and space – this is called a Vex simulation. They use the Infinite Forest to simulate every aspect of time to secure their victory. Because this is a simulation, every time someone enters their experience will be different. This isn’t procedurally generated, but hand-crafted encounters that will change. Every encounter will start you off with the present day, but as you progress through the fight you’ll travel through time providing your fireteam with different enemies with each new encounter.

Adventures Will Now Have More Incentive

Adventures as we know it is unrewarding, but it does gives us a great amount of lore. In Curse of Osiris, Adventures will now have better rewards, a Heroic modifier, and is best used in exploring Mercury. At the tail-end of the stream they showed off a jumping puzzle that was part of an adventure. This made me excited, because if any other adventures are unique as the jumping puzzle this can be a great way for players to just have fun with them.

Though this stream wasn’t as long, it was a meaty one. Now that we know more about the public event, the Infinite Forest, Strikes, Adventures, and how Lost Prophecies work we have an expectation on the expansion. The way they implemented Lost Prophecies are going to keep us mid to hardcore players playing even after the main campaign. The new adventures can potentially be a fun time with a fireteam of friends, I know I would if I was with a friend doing the jumping puzzle.

Just 2 weeks before Curse of Osiris and everyone is getting eager to play it, but don’t forget we have one more stream on the 29th about the most important aspect of Destiny – the loot. I’ll be back next week with the overview of the last stream.

Destiny 2’s New “Gambit” Mode Revived the Game’s Competitive Scene

Destiny 2’s competitive scene has always been a second thought compared to the co-op PvE activities. At the launch of Destiny 2 Bungie tried a different more team-play orientated approach with an all 4v4 pvp match-up. Over time players got tired of that formula, especially, the way players were strategizing. The only way to be competitive is to team-shot a player at long distance, this was the only way everyone played. This kept the matches long and stale. Bungie understood the frustration and decided that they will change something about the Crucible (PvP). In July, Bungie pushed an update that changed the 4v4 format for Crucible to a 6v6, just how it was like in Destiny 1. Adding two more players on a team might not seem like a big change, but it completely changes how freely your team can strategize, this is especially true with solo matchmaking. Bungie knocked it out of the park with this change, of course they had a lot of help from the community. The community wanted th...

Mario Tennis Aces “Swing Mode” is Really Disappointing

Mario Tennis Aces is the latest entry to the Mario Tennis series. This time around Nintendo did no wrong with their tennis series giving us an adventure mode where you move from level to level to complete a series of challenges, a fun online/offline tournament, and exciting local play. I haven’t played the Mario Tennis series since the GameCube days, but I’m having as much fun as I did back then, expect for one mode that made me hate motion controls. During the lead up to launch I had questions about full motion controls, if they would support it for full matches? Can it be an alternative? and will it be like Wii Sports or will it have depth will in the base game? These questions were answered just a couple of days before launch and I was disappointed in how Nintendo implemented the motion controls. Coming from the developers of Wii Sports and how well the motion controls worked with the tennis mini-game gave me hope that Nintendo could do something great with motion ...

The Calming, out of this World Experience from Tetris Effect is a Great Change of Pace and Emotion from Other Tetris games

Ahh, Tetris. A game that your parents and almost every other parent knows. The longevity of it has made it evolve over its existents with the “hold” mechanic – which I’ve grown up with -- and doubling down on the competitive nature of Tetris with Tetris Battle, Tetris DS, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and more. Growing up I was terrible at Tetris – making lines with falling blocks was simple enough, but I didn’t understand how to fix my mistakes. There are many insane Tetris players that I can’t even think about competing with. The stress of trying to keep the best layout of blocks while trying to keep up with my opponent is too intense for my taste. However, Tetris Effect is the total opposite of all those competitive Tetris incarnations. The way Enhanced Games and Mizuguchi plays with music and players emotions to then incorporate it into a puzzle game or even something like Rez: Infinite can give old concepts like Tetris a new breath life. Everything in Tetris Effect is amplified by x...
